DOL Awards $16.8 Million In Grants For Advanced Manufacturing Job Training

Eleven organizations will receive aid to promote high-tech jobs.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced Thursday the awarding of $16.8 million in grants for advanced manufacturing job training.

Eleven organizations were selected from 186 applicants. The grants fall under President Bush’s High Growth Job Training Initiative.

According to the Department of Labor, manufacturing jobs provide better wages and benefits than other fields; however, the industry faces consistent challenges in filling high-tech jobs currently available.

A comprehensive competency model developed with input from the National Association of Manufacturers and others and designed to evolve with changing skills requirements was published in late May.

The President’s Job Training Initiative is a strategic plan to aid in preparing workers to move into new job opportunities in high growth sectors.
