Size Matters: Washington Group International Plans One Of The Largest Cement Plants

New facility will produce 12,000 metric tons of clinker per day, make the plant the largest single clinker production line in the world.

Washington Group International said Tuesday that its majority-owned joint venture with Alberici, Washington Group Alberici, was awarded a contract to build one of the largest cement plants. The plant is being built for Holcim Inc., a manufacturer and supplier of cement and mineral components in the U.S.

The $950 million cement-manufacturing complex will be located in northern Ste. Genevieve, Mo., about 55 miles south of St. Louis.

Procurement, construction management and general contractor services for the main plant will be supplied by Washington Group Alberici.

The single kiln at the plant will produce 12,000 metric tons of clinker per day, which will make the plant the largest single clinker production line in the world.

Clinker is the result of heating ground limestone and other raw materials, which is then ground into a fine powder. The powder is mixed with gypsum to control the setting properties and will produce about 4 million tons of cement annually.

Using the newest technology available, the emissions limits at the plant will be among the lowest of any cement plant.

Plant startup is anticipated in the third quarter of 2009.
