Delphi Awarded $1 Million Grant To Develop Advanced Welding Process

Grant, from NASA and Michigan Research Institute, will further advances in deformation resistance welding.

TROY, Mich. (AP) _ Delphi Corp., the auto supplier, will receive a grant worth approximately $1 million from NASA and the Michigan Research Institute to develop an advanced welding process for use in spacecraft and terrestrial vehicles.

Deformation resistance welding allows different materials and shapes to be welded together at a lower cost than traditional welding methods.

The process can be used to manufacture heavy load-bearing structures, mobile medical products and automobiles due to its ability to handle tube-to-tube and tube-to-sheet welding.

The grant is expected to be announced this week.

Delphi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2005.
