Shell has begun building its “game-changing” petrochemicals complex in Pennsylvania.

The company has already been preparing the site and has laid the foundation and built the infrastructure needed to move people and equipment to the site.

The $6 billion complex will house a facility capable of making 1.6 million metric tons of polyethylene every year, which will be powered by a 250-megawatt natural gas-fired plant. The complex will also include a cooling tower, loading facilities, a water-treatment plant, a lab and office space.

The project is expected to employ 6,000 construction workers and create 600 permanent jobs.

Shell hopes to fire up operations at the plant in 2020 or 2021.
