It sounds unexpected and logical at the same time: Battery maker Energizer announced recently that it will be presenting the phone with the world’s most powerful battery at the 2019 Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona starting Feb 25. The phone from the Power Max line will feature a battery charge of 18,000 milliampere hours (mAh) and is therefore well ahead of existing smartphones with big batteries, like the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 (5,300 mAh) or the Motorola Moto E5 Plus (5,000 mAh).

But milliampere hours alone do not determine how long a phone battery will actually last. Display size, resolution and how efficiently a device uses power play a role too. This chart uses numbers from phone data website Phone Arena, which tests phones using a custom web script that mimics real-life use at a screen brightness rate of 200 nit (luminance). These use durations are well below those that phone manufacturers use to market their phones and also below those measured in continuous use (e.g. playing a really long video). Because the Energizer Max phone is not out yet, it has not been tested for use duration but would be expected to score higher than phones currently on the market just because of its extraordinarily high mAh-count.

Energizer is partnering with phone maker Avenir Telecom to manufacture its phones and currently has a range of smartphones and feature phones on the market. There’s one potential drawback to the Energizer phone though: The company presented a 16,000 mAH-phone, the Power Max P16K, at the MWC in 2018, but never ended up actually producing it.
