Researchers from the University of Washington and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, deployed three Seaglider underwater drones on Wednesday to study climate change.
The Seagliders have been tested in the water before, but after maneuvering around in the ice since January they're now sealed underneath the West Antarctica’s Dotson Ice Shelf by the winter freeze, there to wait until the ice breaks up at the end of 2018. They will primarily hibernate in "loiter" mode, waking up once a month to measure the condition of the ice.
