Why Singapore is Putting Its Oil Back Into The Ground

With little free space above ground, Singapore is using vast caverns to house its $300 billion chemicals and oil industry.

Tiny Singapore is becoming one of the largest chemical and energy hubs in Asia — but it has a storage problem. With little space above ground, it has had to build massive storage facilities in deep caverns to house its $300 billion petro industry.
Now engineers have not only created an impressive underground industrial operation, they're toying with the possibility of building below-ground spaces for people, including a "science city" that could house more than 4,000 researchers.
