Metal Fabricator Eliminates Lacerations with Automated Orbital Wrapper, Cuts Workers' Compensation Claims

At Macksteel, TAB Wrapper Tornado Ends Contact with Sharpened, Laser-Cut Parts

Reading, PA: Metal fabricator Macksteel, Watertown, SD, has eliminated punctures, abrasions and lacerations workers incurred while manually wrapping sharp, laser-cut, metal parts for delivery and reduced workers' compensation claims by automating the wrapping process with the TAB Wrapper Tornado orbital wrapping machine. Since replacing the manual process with the patent-pending TAB Wrapper Tornado in 2012, the company has not incurred a single injury in the packaging department. “We just don't get those cuts anymore and everyone feels better about doing the job right,” says Macksteel General Manager Charlie Mack. “When you can take a task that nobody wants to do and make it safer and easier, it goes a long way towards building a culture of safety.”

Prior to installing the TAB Wrapper Tornado, manually wrapping metal parts for delivery required two workers to hand-wrap plastic film around and under the pallet, passing the film roll back and forth while the pallet was raised on a forklift. By contrast, the TAB Wrapper Tornado with optional, wireless remote enables a single forklift driver to automatically wrap the metal products 360 degrees around and under the pallet to encase the parts as a sturdy, unitized, weather-resistant load ready for transport without leaving the seat of the forklift. “I consider the TAB Wrapper to be the industry's best practice,” says Mack, “It allows us to work safer and faster, and it just plain works.” Workplace injuries resulting in time lost from work that occurred approximately every three months have been virtually eliminated, along with direct savings averaging $2,000.00 per incident.
