VerdeCoat Biopolymer Coating: A Safer Alternative to Perfluoroalkyl Ethyl

Westport, CT (January 21, 2016) Mantrose-Haeuser Co., Inc., a premier leader in the development of coatings technology, reintroduces VerdeCoat bio-polymer barrier coatings in response to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ban against a class of chemicals known as poly- and perfluoroakyl substances (PFASs). According to the ruling passed by the FDA on January 4, 2016, the “food additive regulations no longer provide use of three specific perfluoroakyl ethyl containing food substances (FCSs) as oil and water repellants for paper and paperboard for use in contact with aqueous and fatty foods.” Studies have shown that some PFASs remain in the human body for years and may lead to increased risk of cancer and other health issues.

VerdeCoat custom formulated water based coatings comply with FDA 21CFR part 176.170 and 176.180 making them a safer alternative to PFASs. This patent pending technology provides a high performance barrier to oil and grease, strong water resistance and low MVTR on paper and paperboard food packaging applications. These coatings are microwavable for re-heating foods and ovenable for cooking baked goods. VerdeCoat has been successfully tested under the ASTM 6868 and EN13432 protocol for BPI and Vincotte certification.
