New Va. Tech Dairy Science Facilities Under Construction

Virginia Tech is moving its dairy farm to a new $14 million off-campus facility. Officials say the Blacksburg school's 500-head dairy herd and production facility will be relocated to the university's Kentland Farm in Montgomery County.

WHITETHORNE, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech is moving its dairy farm to a new $14 million off-campus facility.

Officials say the Blacksburg school's 500-head dairy herd and production facility will be relocated to the university's Kentland Farm in Montgomery County. The move could come as early as May.

The Roanoke Times reports that six structures are under construction at the farm, including a milking parlor, free stall barn and waste management facility.

Dairy science professor and nutrition specialist Bob James says an automated calf house will control and monitor feeding to boost health and help with research.

Since 2013, a portion of the about 1,800 gallons of milk produced daily at the dairy facility has been served in one of the school's dining centers. The remainder is sold to the state's prison system.
