European recession slashed 2009 carbon emissions

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European recession last year slashed by 11.6 percent climate-warming emissions from heavy industry participating in the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European recession last year slashed by 11.6 percent climate-warming emissions from heavy industry participating in the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

This was a slightly deeper cut than preliminary data suggested last month.

"It is attributed to several factors -- firstly, the reduced economic activity as a result of the recession, and secondly the low level of gas prices throughout 2009 which has made it much more attractive to produce power from gas rather than more emitting coal," the Commission said in a statement.
