AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Officials say construction on a new freezer facility in Augusta for one of the largest food distribution companies in the country is scheduled to begin in September.

The Kennebec Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2aUqJIT ) the $15 million expansion of Performance Foodservice on Dalton Road was recently approved by the Augusta Planning Board.

Spokesman Joe Vagi says the project has been driven by increased business and Performance Foodservice's further expansion into northern New England.

The company provides food for schools, correctional facilities, hospitals and senior living communities in addition to independent restaurants.

Vagi says the expansion will add 50,000 square feet of freezer space as well as a new, 6-acre parking lot that can accommodate up to 100 tractor-trailers.

Performance Foodservice is the nation's third largest food distributor, behind Sysco and U.S. Foods.
