BURLINGTON, Mass. (AP) — Northeastern University is receiving a $3 million grant from a state agency to support research into cutting-edge manufacturing on the tiniest of scales.
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker's administration announced Tuesday that the five-year grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative will establish a consortium known as the Advanced Nanomanufacturing Cluster for Smart Sensors and Materials.
The goal is for private manufacturing companies and research universities to use nanoscale printing as a way of developing new products with applications in medicine, energy and national defense.
The administration says the state investment will support Northeastern's George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security in Burlington, as well as facilities at Tufts University and the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
The state previously awarded Northeastern $2 million to launch a center for high-rate nanomanufacturing.
