LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A judge has dismissed a steel corporation's challenge to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's plan to make Arkansas comply with a rule focused on eliminating haze in national wilderness areas.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1SOeCuC ) reports that Nucor Steel Arkansas and Nucor-Yamato Steel Co. sued the EPA in October, arguing that the agency should've produced a federal implementation plan for complying with the Regional Haze Rule within two years of rejecting the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality's plan.
Congress passed the rule in 1999 as part of the Clean Air Act.
The original plan issued by the EPA last year recommends installing controls at several coal plants in Arkansas. The EPA estimated the compliance costs to be less than $500 million, while utility groups estimated it would be $2 billion.
