Siemens to provide a double strand wire rod mill for Xuanhua

Linz, Austria, 2010-Jul-28

Xuanhua Iron & Steel (Group) Co., China, has contracted with Siemens VAI for the supply of a double strand wire rod mill. The new plant will enable the steelmaker to enter markets for higher quality products. Delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2011. This is the second Siemens project for a subsidiary company of the Hebei Iron & Steel Group in recent months.

Hebei Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. is one of China's leading steelmakers, and produced over 40 million tons in 2009. The new rolling mills will be located in Xuanhua, Hebei Province. The new equipment will enable Xuanhua to produce rods from 5 mm to 25 mm in diameter, and rebar (plain and HRBF) from 6 mm to 16 mm. Products will include standard high carbon and alloy steel, cold heading steel, bearing steel and spring steel. Depending on the product mix, each strand will produce approximately 500,000 to 600,000 tons per year for both domestic and overseas markets. Mill output speed guarantees are 112 meters/second for 5.5 mm to 7.5 mm rod, 105 m/s for 5.0 mm rod and 85 m/s for 6 mm HRBF rebar.

The scope of supply for each strand is for equipment from the first rolling stand through to the reform station. In the roughing, intermediate, prefinishing trains of each strand, there are a total of fourteen RedRing rolling stands, as well as two intermediate shears for cropping and emergency cutting operation. The rod outlet equipment includes prefinishing mill #1, prefinishing mill #2, a high-speed shear arrangement, No-Twist Mill, Reducing/Sizing Mill, pinch roll, and laying head for the rod outlet, with proprietary mechatronical control systems for the shear, water boxes, reducing/sizing mill, and pinch roll utilizing the latest Siemens S7 control system and WinCC human machine interface (HMI). Operational change parts including 40 standby RedRing stands are also provided. The contract covers engineering for all the equipment and site supervision for its installation and commissioning.
