3 Nutty Facts to Munch on in Honor of Chocolate-Covered Peanuts Day

In honor of National Chocolate-Covered Peanuts Day, I thought it would be fun to take a trip back in time to find out more about these delicious snacks. Did you know, for example, that the original chocolate-covered peanut candies were called Goobers?

Ah, Wednesday — a day notorious for it's middle-of-the-week slump feeling. But this week brings a little more happiness and a lot more chocolately goodness.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, there truly is a day for everything. And today, Feb. 25, is National Chocolate-Covered Peanuts Day.

In honor of the special day, I thought it would be fun to take a trip back in time to find out more about these delicious snacks.

Here are a few "Did You Knows" while you're munching on those peanuts:

  • The original chocolate covered peanut candies were called Goobers, which were first sold in 1925. Goober, a southern word for peanut, was manufactured by the Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate & Coca Company. Today, though, they are made by Nestle.

  • Peanut M&Ms are one of the more well-known chocolate-covered nuts. The peanut M&M was introduced in 1954, and were only tan in color. It wasn't until 1960 that the red, yellow and green colors were introduced. In 1976, the orange-colored M&M made its debut, and in 1995 more than ten million people voted to add the blue color to the mix.

  • So long as it's in moderation, both nuts — and chocolate! â€” are good for you. Research provided by the Mayo Clinic proves that eating nuts is good for your heart. Nuts contain unsaturated fatty acids, and many other nutrients, that make it a healthy snacking choice. And for you chocolate lovers out there (myself included), although chocolate has not yet gained a status of "health food" quite yet, a number of studies suggest it can be a heart-healthy choice, especially when choosing dark varieties. Cocoa, a main ingredient in chocolate, has been proven to reduce risk factors for heart disease. How's that for a yummy treat?

What are you waiting for? Go enjoy some of these nutty snacks — if not for your own pleasure, then at least in celebration of the (unofficial) national holiday!
