Slashfood reported that peanut butter may contain aflatoxin, a carcinogen that has been shown to cause liver cancer. Aflatoxin makes its way into the nut through fungus that can penetrate the soft, porous shell of a peanut. Currently, all commercially produced peanut butter is tested for aflatoxin, but the less processed the peanut butter is, the more likely it contains the carcinogen. Still, experts say that the risk isn’t high enough to justify cutting peanut butter out of your diet, especially since the spread provides so much nutrition.
