HOUMA, La. (AP) — Officials say the money is in place this week to begin construction on a new power generation facility that will serve parts of Terrebonne Parish.
The parish will join with other public utilities in the region to build a new combined-cycle generator, which will be fueled by natural gas but also captures its steam to create more power.
The $104 million plant will be owned by the Louisiana Energy Power Authority, which already contracts locally to provide some power generation. Tom Bourg, Terrebonne's utilities director, tells The Courier (https://bit.ly/1bWEzZx ) the facility will create 65 megawatts of power.
Terrebonne's share of the power will supplement power provided to about 13,500 residents mostly in Houma. Power generated at the facility will also benefit Morgan City, Jonesville, Rayne and Plaquemine and Vidalia.
