New NV Gold Mine Breaks Ground

Midway Gold Corp. has broken ground on a new gold mine in White Pine County. The Pan Mine, located at the northern end of the Pancake Mountains about 50 miles west of Ely, will be the Denver-based company's first mine in Nevada.

ELY, Nev. (AP) — Midway Gold Corp. has broken ground on a new gold mine in White Pine County.

The Pan Mine, located at the northern end of the Pancake Mountains about 50 miles west of Ely, will be the Denver-based company's first mine in Nevada.

The mine will feature two primary open pits, three satellite pits, one heap leach pad, three rock disposal areas and a transmission line. According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the total surface disturbance will be about 3,300 acres.

Midway officials say they expect to start seeing gold by the end of the year, and the mine will provide over 100 high-paying jobs.

BLM officials say their studies showed the mine won't harm the environment, including the imperiled sage grouse. The agency signed off on the project on Dec. 20.
