A trade group representing solar power companies says the industry employs 93,000 workers and that total will increase rapidly.

The Solar Foundation said Wednesday that more than half of the companies in the industry plan to add jobs in the next year.

The 2,400 solar-power manufacturers, installers and other companies responding to a survey by the foundation said they collectively expect to add 26 percent more workers by August 2011.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said in a statement issued by the trade group that the $2.3 billion in tax credits for U.S.-based clean energy manufacturing are working. She said the industry's growth would help protect the environment and keep the United States competitive in the global economy.

The survey was conducted by the foundation and Green LMI Consulting with help from Cornell University.
