According to research by Industrial Info, interest in biodiesel and renewable fuel sources is surging.

Biodiesel comes from renewable sources such as soybean oil and spent yellow fryer grease that needs disposal. This fuel source will prove to be a worthy replacement for traditional petroleum diesel in its pure form and as a 20 percent blend with petroleum diesel.

Currently, there are 26 large commercial-scale biodiesel plants operating in the United States, which produce approximately 150 million gallons annually. About 20 new biodiesel plants are currently under construction, which could increase production to roughly 500 million gallons by September of 2007, IIR said.

An additional fifty plants are in various stages pre-construction, which should add another 2.9 billion gallons annually when working to capacity by 2008.
