Governors' Coalition Pushing Ethanol Recommendations

Recommendations include expansion of the Renewable Fuels Standard and funding for biofuel research, demonstration and incentive programs.

A report released Thursday by the 37 members of the Governors’ Ethanol Coalition seeks to have the President and Congress adopt its four recommendations.

Those recommendations are:
– The expansion of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) to cover a short-term target of 12 billion gallons a year of ethanol and biodiesel utilization by 2010 and the long-term targets of 15 percent of total motor fuels consumption by 2015 and 25 percent by 2025
– The assignment of a financial value to the RFS cellulosic ethanol 2.5:1 trading credit into a more practical credit.
– The establishment of a timeframe for the delivery of 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline infrastructure on a regional basis within 5 years.
– Adequate funding for the Energy Policy Act of 2005 authorized biofuel research, demonstration and incentive programs.

An additional study by the Coalition suggests that the adoption of a target of providing 20 percent of the nation’s fuel supply from biofuels would have the benefits of creating 2.4 million new jobs and $110 billion in direct economic activity per year, among others.
