How much time do you spend at work? The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, an international economic organization, released a study showing work-life balance across the world. Work-life balance was measured by the amount of time people spend at work compared to the time they spend on personal care (sleeping, eating etc.) and leisure. The United States falls near the middle of the 10-point scale, with the Netherlands taking the number one spot for the best work-life balance and Turkey with the worst.
Almost 34 percent of employees in Turkey worked very long hours (measured in the study as 50 hours per week or more.)
In the U.S., 11 percent of surveyed workers work very long hours. OECD notes that U.S. spends above the OECD average on child welfare and education, but devotes most of that funding to education, with a relatively weak focus on early investment (childcare and support for families with newborns).
The OECD addressed the Netherlands this way: “In the Netherlands, family and children policy outcomes are generally good… Many Dutch families share work responsibilities – the female employment rate is well above the OECD average (69.9 percent compared to the OECD average of 57.5 percent), as are maternal employment rates – but more often than not women work part-time.”
