This year’s Chem Show at the Javits Center in New York City brought the latest innovations in chemical processing to the showroom floor. Here’s a sample of some of the trendiest tech on display.
3D Printing
It’s no secret that 3D printing is one of the most exciting innovations of the last decade. But what does it mean for chemical manufacturing?
According to Daniel Fraser of Fraser Advanced Information Systems, who displayed a range of 3D printed parts made from their printers, the company’s main clients are businesses who make equipment for chemical processors. For those companies, a 3D printer can be a rapid way to make prototypes for new models or for direct digital manufacturing to accelerate the design process.

But in a chemical plant 3D printers could add value in a machine shop to replace plastic or metal pieces in equipment.
The Dust Dilemma
SonicAire gave a well-attended seminar at the show on OSHA inspections and the dangers of combustible dust. Their solution? A fan that prevents the need to send workers up to the ceiling to clean overhead fugitive dust.
The company’s range of fans, including the most recent model on display, promises to blow away accumulated dust around a manufacturing facility and prevent future buildups that create an explosion hazard. The result is a cleaner operating space that’s in compliance with dust regulations and safer for employees.
Benchtop Reactor
JULABO displayed the company’s latest benchtop reactor in its booth that they say is unique because of a new, patented JRS valve with flush faced seal and the reactor’s capability to withstand extreme temps.
Released in August, the reaction system also features rugged glass walls, a QWK reaction platform and OHS rod mounted overhead stirrers for an efficient way to handle small-scale lab work.
Separation Technology
Artisan Industries displayed a new innovation in separation technology: Rototherm thin-film evaporators and dryers. With a special screw device in the unit, the company says the equipment, which could be used in chemical, pharmaceutical or food processing, prevents material from getting gunked up in the pipe.
The technology runs as a continuous process and is designed to be especially efficient with materials that are sticky, viscous, tarry or crust-forming when concentrated or dry. Representatives from Artisan at the show said the new technology has been highly in-demand since it was introduced this year.
A Twice-as-Nice Benchtop Reactor
The ChemRnxHub dual reactor on display in the Chemglass Life Sciences booth is completely customizable so you can design the your lab perfectly to your specs.
The company says the product’s unique support stand and clamping system allow users to easily install and remove glassware. Equipped with a high-efficiency coil condenser, easy-to-remove hoses and a universal motor mount, Chemglass says it is a complete processing system in an easy-to-assemble package.
