Woman Killed In Polymer Plant Explosion

Authorities are investigating a deadly explosion involving a boiler at Meggitt Polymers and Composites in the northwest Georgia town of Rockmart. A 56-year-old female was the only reported victim, according to state and county officials.

ROCKMART, Ga. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a deadly explosion at a manufacturing plant in the northwest Georgia town of Rockmart. Polk County Coroner Lester Litesey III told The Associated Press that 56-year-old Elaine Davidson of Rockmart died in the blast. It happened shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday at the Meggitt Polymers and Composites plant about 45 miles northwest of Atlanta.

Litesey said the explosion involved a boiler, and there were no other deaths or injuries associated with the incident. Glenn Allen, a spokesman for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, says a state investigator was at the scene. A document from Hudgens' office shows that the boiler involved passed an inspection on October 2, 2010 and that clearance was good until November 1, 2014.
