Not even a month after two workers were badly burned by sulfuric acid at the Tesoro refinery on February 12th, two more workers were injured on Monday in a similar fashion.
In what Contra Costa County hazardous materials experts are calling a level one incident, two workers were sprayed with sulfuric acid just before 11:00 am Monday morning. One was only minimally exposed but the other was said to have been saturated by the dangerous chemical. Both underwent the decontamination process and were immediately hospitalized.
Tina Barbee, the spokeswoman from Tesoro, claimed that the two workers were wearing full protective gear when the incident occurred.
That afternoon the California Department of Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued and order to preserve the area around Monday's spill so that an investigation could begin. This investigation follows on the heels of the one undertaken to look into the February incident, in which Tesoro officials had denied federal safety officials access to the plant.
