State documents show that a potentially harmful chemical and a number of other compounds have been found in fish near a North Carolina chemical plant.
News outlets report the state Department of Environmental Quality conducted a preliminary study of a lake near the Chemours plant in Bladen County earlier this year. The lake is also near the Fayetteville Works plant.
The tests took samples from three types of fish, sediment from two locations around a lake, and water from two locations.
The tests showed GenX and similar compounds in the samples.
GenX is used to make coating for nonstock cookware and other uses.
The state report says the study is not meant as a fish consumption advisory and the results cannot be applied to any other body of water.
