Sadara Chemical is on its way to solidifying its stance as the biggest chemical complex ever built in a single phase.

Construction on the joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Dow Chemical Company got underway in 2015 in Saudi Arabia. Since then, the different sections of the plant have been incrementally coming online.

Recently Sadara announced that it has begun producing propylene glycol (PG), a chemical used in food products, cosmetics and coatings.

"We are nearing the finish line and the teams are all working tirelessly to bring up the few remaining facilities," a spokesperson from Sadara told Reuters.

The $20 billion-complex will be home to 26 world-scale manufacturing plants, 14 of which will produce specific chemicals in Saudi Arabia for the first time. Sadara said it expects that the complex will generate $10 billion in revenues each year.

The PG plant is the 22nd of the 26 to begin production.
