All told, Bayer and Monsanto are looking to shed about $2.5-$3 billion in assets.

According to anonymous sources quoted in Bloomberg, BASF and Syngenta submitted preliminary bids for businesses including canola, cottonseeds, the LibertyLink herbicide-resistant traits and its glufosinate weed killer. Bayer is also looking to sell its garlic and pepper seed companies.

Analysts predicted in March that BASF and Syngenta would be among the most prominent bidders for the leftovers from the $66-billion Bayer-Monsanto matchup.

Bloomberg reports that if BASF makes a move on Bayer’s seeds assets, it would be a departure from its current focus on crop protection.
