Koenigsegg Issues Stop-Drive After $3 Million Car Bursts into Flames

Leaving nothing behind but a blackened pile of scrap.

Luxury carmaker Koenigsegg has issued a stop-drive after an issue with one of its vehicles resulted in a disaster of epic proportions.

And while typical recalls numbers in the thousands of vehicles – sometimes the millions – this one is on a much, much smaller scale: just 28 vehicles are being recalled.

And that is the scope of a recall when you’re dealing with a $3 million hypercar. Reports say that the Koenigsegg Jesko Attack “Nür Edition’’ burst into flames last week in Greece, leaving nothing behind but a blackened pile of scrap. No one was injured in the incident, but it was enough for the Swedish automaker to issue a stop-drive on all the Jeskos it has sold in order to investigate.

The Drive has pointed out that the temperatures in Greece have been dangerously high, and that the doomed Jesko had been taking part in a slow rally of luxury cars. The Drive says lots of high revving at slow speeds, along with the hot temperatures, may have been a recipe for disaster.

A separate report by Carscoops claimed that this particular vehicle had an exposed carbon fiber body option that added nearly half a million to the price tag of a car that’s now a pile of rubble..

Koenigsegg has plans to build 125 of these vehicles, that is, after it has a chance to review the circumstances of what took place in Greece. The email they reportedly sent to the 28 owners noted the move was “out of an abundance of caution” and that the Jesko owners were being asked to “hold off on driving their cars until (the company) had a chance to understand the situation better.”

The Jesko features a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and produces 1,280 horsepower. The company is characterized as being a hyper elite luxury brand and has set records over the years for fastest performance car, as well as most powerful production car in the world. The Koenigsegg Jesko was named as the 2022 Top Gear Awards Hypercar Of The Year.
