Program Trains Formerly Incarcerated Citizens for Manufacturing Careers

Students receive machinist training and on-the-job experience.

A program at Marshall University is training formerly incarcerated citizens in manufacturing.

The program, RecoverWorksWV, is a part of the university’s Robert C. Byrd Institute (RCBI).

The 15-week course includes machinist training, on-the-job experience and peer counseling support.

Students will also learn blueprint reading, computer-aided design, precision measurement and safety.

Resume writing, job interview prep and money management are covered as well.

RCBI Director of Communications Mike Friel added that the program tries to arrange “earn and learn” apprenticeships for participants.

The program is available to formerly incarcerated men and women in West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southeastern Ohio affected by the opioid epidemic.
