MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — The chief executive of ThyssenKrupp AG says the company remains committed to success at its new carbon steel mill in Alabama, though the future is less certain for 550 workers employed by the mill's stainless steel operations.
CEO Heinrich Hiesinger told shareholders at the company's annual meeting Friday that ThyssenKrupp should "successfully complete the commercial ramp-up" of plants in the U.S. and Brazil despite recent financial losses in its Steel Americas division.
The Press-Register reports (http://bit.ly/wcFg1t ) the remarks appear to refute a German magazine report thatThyssenKrupp might sell its carbon steel operations, which employ 1,600 Alabama workers.
The $5 billion mill in Calvert makes both carbon and stainless steel. Hiesinger says the company is still considering a possible sale of its stainless steel business.
