Survey Examines Energy Prices and Growth

A survey based on interviews with senior executives of large U.S. industrial manufacturers reveals that 67 percent of manufacturers are absorbing higher energy costs rather than passing them on to customers.

PricewaterhouseCoopers' Manufacturing Barometer, a quarterly survey based on interviews with 60 senior executives of large U.S. industrial manufacturers, says 67 percent of manufacturers are absorbing higher energy costs rather than passing them on to customers. These companies predict that energy costs will rise further over the next 12 months and worry the higher price of energy will be a barrier to growth.

Despite these concerns, manufacturers are optimistic of their financial future. Those surveyed projected an average growth of 7.8 percent during the next year due in large part to international prospects.
