SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) -- General Electric says it plans to lay off up to 200 salaried employees at its Schenectady-based Power & Water Division by the end of this year.
Local media report that GE officials say the Fairfield, Conn.-based company is eliminating the white-collar positions to remain competitive. Officials wouldn't divulge the exact number of employees to be laid off.
Schenectady is home to a GE steam turbine and generator plant, which employs 1,500 hourly workers. Company officials say the layoffs don't include those workers.
Tuesday's announcement came nearly two weeks after GE said it would close its manufacturing plant in Fort Edward, 45 miles north of Albany. GE says those operations will be moved to Florida because the Fort Edward plant isn't competitive. The plant employs about 200 workers.
