NEW DELHI (AP) — A court in India on Monday convicted a man of murder for a bomb blast that killed 17 people three years ago at a popular bakery in western India.
The court also found Mirza Himayat Baig guilty of criminal conspiracy in the February 2010 blast at the German Bakery in the city of Pune, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.
The bakery was popular with foreign tourists and students, and was crowded when it was attacked. At least 64 people were injured in the explosion. Those killed included an Italian, an Iranian and two Sudanese.
Baig was arrested months after the explosion when police found a cache of explosives at his home in Latur district of the state.
Police said Baig had links to the banned Pakistan-based Islamist rebel group, Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Police say six other suspects involved in the conspiracy are still at large.
Baig's attorney said his client was not in Pune when the blast occurred and that the men who planted the bomb at the bakery were absconding.
"We plan to appeal against this decision in the high court. Let them arrest the people who actually planted the bomb," the lawyer, Abdul Rahman, said Monday.
The court will announce Baig's punishment Thursday.
