Calif. Food Maker Wants to Build Plant in NY

GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) — A California-based manufacturer of organic and natural food wants to build a plant in upstate New York that it says will employ nearly 700 workers.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports that Amy Berliner of Amy's Kitchen Inc. appeared before the Orange County Industrial Development Agency Wednesday to seek abatements on property and other taxes for the company, which wants to build in the town of Goshen, 55 miles northwest of New York City.

The company says the $95 million plant would be 350,000 to 500,000 square feet and would employ about 680 people.

The 26-year-old company based in Petaluma, Calif., has 1,900 employees at its plants in Santa Rosa, Calif., and Medford, Ore.

The private, family-owned company specializes in convenience and frozen meals that are vegetarian, and egg- and- peanut-free.
