TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will recall its Outlander plug-in hybrid vehicle due to control program defects only three months after its launch.

Subject to the recall are 3,839 units produced for the Japanese market between January and March, the automaker said in a report to the government.

The recall comes after the company inspected the vehicle following a report that a lithium-ion battery in an Outlander PHEV overheated at a Mitsubishi auto dealer.

Mitsubishi Motors is expected to consider recalling the vehicle again if the causes of the battery overheating incident are specified.
