Dow Personal Care to Present Poster at SCC Annual Meeting and Technology Showcase

As part of its strategy to develop innovative new solutions for the global personal care industry, Dow Personal Care announced today that it will showcase new research on the use of zinc oxide to protect hair from ultraviolet (UV) damage and color fading at the upcoming SCC Annual Meeting and Technology Showcase, to be held December 10-11, 2009.

"Through our ongoing evaluations, we have found that ZinClear™ IM Zinc Oxide Dispersions are an ideal choice for use not only in sun and skin care products, but are a good fit with hair care applications as well," said Dr. Tatiana Drovetskaya, senior R&D specialist, Dow Personal Care. "Historically, the use of UV filters has been limited in hair care products due to different aesthetic requirements and a lack of significant protection in rinse-off applications. We are enthusiastic about the opportunities for ZinClear™ IM in hair care, offering transparent, full-spectrum UV protection to protect against sun damage and color fading, without weighing hair down or creating build-up."

According to David Sutton, product marketing manager for Dow Personal Care, UV protection is a growing segment within hair care market. "In talking with customers, we've heard that consumers are trying to prevent color-treated and highlighted hair from fading, especially as they may be extending the time between treatments to save money. ZinClear™ IM offers hair care formulators a new way to help protect color-treated hair and improve the overall strength and condition of hair by preventing damage from UV rays."

In addition to zinc oxide, Dow Personal Care offers other technologies to help maintain color-treated hair. "We have a long history of experience in the hair care market, with a broad range of polymers that can help more effectively deposit beneficial ingredients such as UV filters and conditioning agents," said Drovetskaya. "In addition, we have recently introduced the use of METHOCELâ?¢ Cellulose Ether products to enable formulators to use reduced amounts of surfactants, while still providing excellent cleaning performance and foam volume in a finished system that is gentle to the hair and helps to preserve color."

Although the focus of the poster presented at the technology showcase is on hair care, representatives from Dow Personal Care will be available at the meeting to discuss other applications for ZinClear™ IM products. "Introducing the use of ZinClear™ IM for hair care applications is just one part of our strategy to provide more solutions to meet customers' needs," said Sutton. "Over the next year, we plan to further refine and optimize our offering for sun care, by exploring new product combinations and synergies between our existing technologies to better meet varying regional formulation needs, regulatory changes and performance requirements."
