Wireless Education Technology Conference Unites Business, Academic and Government Leaders to Discuss How Mobile Learning Can Improve Education

– October 13, 2011 – The 2011Wireless Education Technology (Wireless EdTech) Conference advisory board and Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), through its Wireless Reach™ initiative, today announced guest speakers for this year’s conference, including Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and James Shelton, assistant deputy director for Innovation and Improvement for the U.S. Department of Education. James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic, will conduct an on-stage interview with Chairman Genachowski to discuss the importance of broadband, digital literacy and how mobile technology can stimulate job creation and spur U.S. competitiveness. James Shelton will highlight his vision for mobile learning and how it can help improve education in the United States. Scheduled for October 20-21, 2011 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C., the second annual conference is expected to draw an estimated 400 attendees and feature an international roster of more than 50 speakers and leaders in business, academia and government who will address the use of mobile learning for improving education.

Peggy Johnson, executive vice president and president of Global Market Development for Qualcomm, will deliver a keynote address providing an outlook for the future of wireless technology and how it can help ensure all students have 24/7 access to learning materials and each other.

“The world is at a tipping point for mobile learning. Wireless is the largest information, communication and technology platform in history, and mobile broadband is transforming how we can deliver educational materials and experiences to all students,” said Peggy Johnson. “The technology now exists to support learning on a massive scale and advance the 21st century skills needed to compete in the global economy.”

The conference is co-hosted by Dr. Chris Dede, Timothy E. Wirth professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education; and Julie Evans, chief executive officer of Project Tomorrow. The conference also features distinguished speakers including Dr. Shirley Malcom, head of the Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Dr. Thomas G. Carroll, president of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future; Dr. Carlos Delgado Kloos, vice-chancellor for Infrastructures and Environment at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Spain; and TAN Chun Ming, principal of Nan Chiau Primary School in Singapore.

The 2011 Wireless EdTech conference also includes plenary panels and breakout sessions focusing on major issues in research, practice and policy that must be resolved to achieve the full potential of mobile broadband in learning. Participants will spend the first day exploring the theme, “What do we know about mobile learning? What’s the vision for mobile learning?” Discussion topics include international mobile learning initiatives and the potential for developing countries to leapfrog industrial era schools, funding sources and infrastructure needs, as well as the strategies by which educators are successfully deploying mobile learning today. The second day’s theme, “What do we need to learn to implement wireless technology programs and how do we get there?” will engage participants in discussions of the next steps needed to realize the full potential of mobile learning.
