LG&E To Pay Fine, Reduce Ash Emissions

LG&E has agreed to pay a $22,500 fine to settle allegations that coal ash emissions have repeatedly landed in a neighborhood near one of its plants.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- LG&E has agreed to pay a $22,500 fine to settle allegations that coal ash emissions have repeatedly landed in a neighborhood near one of its plants.

Officials with Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District on Wednesday approved the agreement with the utility, which did not admit any wrongdoing.

Originally, the city had sought a higher fine, but agreed to the reduction after utility officials said they would take action to reduce the amount of blowing ash.

Steve Turner, who manages the plant, told The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/HV4E9c) that the facility had a good overall environmental record though "some emissions events" have resulted in complaints and notices of violation from the district.

He said new pollution controls have already been added to the plant's ash-processing facility.

"Our actions go far beyond our permit and regulatory requirements," he said.
