A company that owns a Humboldt County pulp mill is giving up on plans to try get the mill operating again.

The president of Freshwater Tissue Co. says the plant in Samoa, just outside Eureka, will remain closed for good because the company was unable to raise the money to restart the mill.

Freshwater bought the plant from Evergreen Pulp Inc. in February 2009. Evergreen, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Lee and Man Paper Manufacturing, had announced it was shutting down the mill in October 2008 as demand for paper, containerboard and housing materials declined.

Freshwater president Bob Simpson told the Eureka Times-Standard that federal regulations made it impossible to secure loans to get the plant operating again.

Before it was closed the plant had employed more than 200 workers.
