Toshiba Selling Malaysian Semiconductor Unit

Toshiba Corp. plans to sell all shares in its semiconductor assembly subsidiary to U.S. chip assembly company Amkor Technology Inc. by early January.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Toshiba Corp. said Friday it plans to sell all shares in its semiconductor assembly subsidiary in Malaysia to U.S. chip assembly company Amkor Technology Inc. for several billion yen by early January next year.

By selling the wholly owned unit, Toshiba will shift its focus and resources to front-end wafer fabrication for power semiconductors used in various digital devises, including mobile phones and notebook personal computers, as well as by boosting output at its chip manufacturing base in Nomi, Ishikawa Prefecture, the Japanese electronics company said.

Established in 1973, Toshiba Electronics Malaysia Sdn. has about 1,500 employees and its main product has been power semiconductors in recent years, Toshiba said.
