Toshiba May Build Smart Community In Osaka

Toshiba is considering building a next-generation smart community in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture involving efficient uses of energy, company officials said.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Toshiba Corp. is considering building a next-generation smart community in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture involving efficient uses of energy, company officials said Wednesday.

Toshiba is mulling launching construction jointly with a real estate company and a house builder in the business year starting in April 2013 at an old factory site, the officials said.

It plans to building residences, commercial facilities, and solar power generation facilities, the officials said.

In residences, Toshiba plans to install smart meters to show power consumption by appliances, energy-saving home appliances, solar power generation systems and rechargeable batteries, the officials said.

Toshiba aims to chalk up sales of 900 billion yen in fiscal 2015 in the smart-community business.
