Report: Unilever Closing Conn. Plant

WTNH-TV says Unilever, which makes household products such as Dove soaps and Lipton tea, is shutting a Connecticut plant and laying off 200 workers.

CLINTON, Conn. (AP) -- Unilever, which makes household products such as Dove soaps, Lipton tea and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, is shutting a Connecticut plant and laying off nearly 200 workers.

WTNH-TV reported Thursday that the company said it will shut its Clinton plant by the end of next year and lay off 49 salaried workers and 135 hourly employees.

Plant manager Paul Reiland told WTNH-TV that an analysis shows the company can achieve greater efficiencies by shifting production.

The company did not immediately respond to an email seeking confirmation or details.

The Clinton plant manufactures Vaseline petroleum jelly, Pond's face care, Suave hair styling products and other consumer items.
