Groundbreaking Set For Maryland Electric Motor Plant

Groundbreaking is scheduled for a new electric motor manufacturing facility at General Motor's Powertrain Baltimore location.

WHITE MARSH, Md. (AP) -- Groundbreaking is scheduled for a new electric motor manufacturing facility at General Motor's Powertrain Baltimore location.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and other officials will participate in Tuesday's ceremony for the facility that is expected to create about 190 jobs. It is being described as the country's first electric motor plant owned by a major automaker.

The plant in White Marsh currently makes hybrid transmissions, but GM announced last year that it would invest more than $246 million to build the electric motors. The new plant is being built with GM, state and federal funding.
