300 Workers Opt To Leave SRS And 1,100 To Be Cut

About 330 workers at the Savannah River Site choosing to leave or retire from the former nuclear weapons complex, but the company says nearly 1,100 employees must be cut.

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) -- About 330 workers at the Savannah River Site are choosing to leave or retire from the former nuclear weapons complex, but the company that runs the site says nearly 1,100 employees still must be cut.

The Aiken Standard reported Friday the 1,100 will be laid off in two phases between January and August.

A company spokesman says 328 workers decided by Wednesday's deadline to leave voluntarily.

Will Callicott with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions says workers leaving and those getting laid off will get the same severance package. That's one week's pay for every year an employee has worked at the complex, up to 26 years.

The company employs 6,700 people at the site. About $1.6 billion in federal stimulus cash funded 1,000 jobs. Those are not included among the 1,400 jobs being eliminated.
