Whirlpool Breaks Ground For Tenn. Plant

Company broke ground on $120 million cooking appliance plant and distribution center in Cleveland, a project expected to create 130 jobs.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (AP) -- Whirlpool Corp. has broken ground on a $120 million cooking appliance plant and distribution center in Cleveland, a project expected to create 130 new jobs in the East Tennessee community.

The Benton Harbor, Mich.-based company is closing a 100-year-old facility and building a 1 million square-foot plant and 400,000 square-foot distribution center.

The LEED-certified facility is expected to start production of built-in cooking products in early 2012.

Whirlpool currently has about 1,500 employees in Cleveland.

More than 400 people attended the Thursday ceremony.

Whirlpool Corp. chairman and chief executive Jeff Fettig said in a statement that the company is "committed to investing in its U.S. manufacturing and distribution facilities."
