LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Environmental Protection Agency has fined nine California metal finishing companies for breaking federal hazardous waste laws.
The agency announced Thursday that it inspected companies in Southern California and Santa Clara over the past year and found violations ranging from improper labeling to open containers of hazardous waste. The companies paid fines ranging from $2,000 to over $48,000.
The agency says metal finishers typically generate waste containing hazards such as acids, lead, and cyanide.
