RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Pfizer Inc. plans to stop producing consumer health care products at its plant in Richmond as part of a global restructuring.
Pfizer said Tuesday it plans to cease operations at eight plants in Ireland, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. by the end of 2015, and reduce operations at six plants, including the one in Richmond, over the next several years.
Pfizer spokeswoman Kristen Neese told The Richmond Times-Dispatch that about 550 manufacturing jobs at the Richmond plant will be cut.
Pfizer said in a news release that its research and development operation in Richmond will continue.
Worldwide, 6,000 jobs will be cut as the world's largest drug maker trims manufacturing capacity for health care products.
