Mitsubishi Reopens Venezuela Plant

Automaker says it will reopen the Venezuelan car assembly plant that it shuttered last month due to labor disputes.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. says it will reopen the Venezuelan car assembly plant that it shuttered last month due to labor disputes.

Mitsubishi says it expects the plant in the eastern city of Barcelona to be fully operational within two weeks.

The company closed the plant Aug. 24 amid a protest by workers who said the company owed them time off.

Mitsubishi says it has been able to restart production with the help of the Venezuelan Labor Ministry, which prohibited workers from distributing pamphlets "inciting violence."

The announcement to reopen was published in the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal on Tuesday.

Mitsubishi's workers have staged several strikes over the past year. The plant employs about 1,400 workers.
